Art Kavanagh

In 1994 Art Kavanagh (with Rory Murphy) wrote about the Wexford Gentry, and this was followed by another book in 1996 entitled The Wexford Gentry 2.

From this the idea was born of starting a series of books dealing with the Gentry & Aristocracy of the various counties of Ireland. In addition Art Kavanagh felt that the history of old Gaelic septs should not be forgotten either and this led to his writing and/or publishing The Kavanaghs Kings of Leinster, In the Shadow of Mount Leinster, O’Nolan – the History of a People and The O Callaghan family of Co. Cork.

In 2003 Art Kavanagh worked in partnership with Willie Hayes from Tipperary to bring out another book in the series entitled The Tipperary Gentry. This was followed in 2004 by two books – The Gentry & Aristocracy of Co. Kilkenny (by Art Kavanagh) and The Gentry & Aristocracy of Co. Kildare (by Turtle Bunbury). These authors published two more books in the series in 2006 – The Gentry & Aristocracy of Meath (Art Kavanagh) and The Gentry & Aristocracy of Wicklow (Turtle Bunbury)

The three writer/historians  mentioned above felt that because such families were in serious decline in Ireland that urgent work needed to be done to make an accurate record of their cultural and political footprint.

However because of a lack of funding and a general apathy from the public which indicates a lack of interest in the topic the project has been shelved temporarily.

Most of the books mentioned above have been sold but a small number are still available on this website.
